TONY HAWK’S FIRST X GAMES | World of X Games
In 1995, ESPN introduced The Extreme Games to the masses. Billed as a weeklong competition, The Extreme Games (later changed to X Games) brought out the top action sports athletes in the world, across skateboarding, BMX, inline skating and more.
At the time, Tony Hawk was one of a few veteran pro skateboarders on the scene, successfully making the jump past the skateboarding craze of the 1980s, into a more underground, authentic scene spawned during the 1990s. But all that was about to change. With a boost of commercial exposure from ESPN and The Extreme Games, Tony Hawk would become one of the most recognized names in skateboarding throughout the world. And to this day, Tony’s name is synonymous with skateboarding, thanks in part to the momentum created here. Take a look back at Tony’s first vert and “street” runs from July, 1995.
And oh yeah, Tony took home the first Extreme Games gold medal in Skateboard Vert.
Ryan Sheckler: BEING EXTENDED CUT | World of X Games
Considered the first modern child star of skateboarding, Ryan Sheckler was competing at a pro level by the time he was 13, followed by his own reality television show, scores of pro accolades and the trappings of fame at a young age. Rather than burn out, Sheckler adjusted his focus and returned to his true love of skating. Now with the gift of perspective, he’s enjoying a new life of Ryan.
Shaun White’s First Skateboarding Gold: X GAMES THROWBACK | World of X Games
It’s no secret that Shaun White is a groundbreaking snowboarder. But you might not realize that back in the day, Shaun was also pushing the envelope in Skateboard Vert at X Games. In fact, Shaun skated for Tony Hawk’s Birdhouse brand before breaking out on his own, and even received his own Birdhouse pro model in 2007, just months before winning his first Skateboard Vert gold at X Games. This is a look back at that performance.

MARIAH DURAN: Everything I Did Was For Skateboarding | World of X Games
In the first few years of X Games competitions, Mariah Duran was still slinging pizzas and doing fundraising to earn the necessary money to travel to competitions. Then, in 2016, Duran earned her first silver medal, and everything changed. She took her earnings, bought a car and went into heavy production mode, which earned her more prestigious placings at comps and then the opportunity for her to skate full-time. Nowadays, the Women’s Skateboard Street podium has become a familiar place for Duran to land at X Games. But with competitions taking a back seat this year, Duran isn’t slowing down at all. Here, Brando’s World of X catches up at home with the Albuquerque native.
