This year, to celebrate Go Skateboarding Day, JENKEM decided to skip the skating and instead headed over to Vans Space 198 in Brooklyn to bother their neighbors. The team had their doors open in celebration of the day, complete with a DJ spinning a bunch of Wu-Tang and a packed-out park. The locals we talked to in between spurts of rain had a lot to say about optimal skate video length, dream blunt rotations, and how to celebrate Go Skateboarding Day properly. Turns out there is no wrong way to celebrate – except maybe by sitting in the rain interviewing random people.
VICE’s Taji Ameen Revisits His Skate Past – JENKEM
Over the past few years, Taji’s work with VICE and the upper echelons of New York Media took him away from his skateboarding past a little bit. We wanted to have him reconnect with skating and reminisce on those early days, so JENKEM met up with him and his old friend Billy to skate, catch up, and freestyle a little bit.
Checking out the Historic Spots of Vienna, Austria – JENKEM
What do you know about Vienna? Probably not much. Compared to other Euro cities like London and Paris, you barely hear about skating in Austria’s capital. Paul Labadie, filmer for Vans Europe, was inspired by our video in Athens to show off the spots around downtown Vienna. Remember kids, just because it isn’t tagged on IG doesn’t mean it isn’t worth checking out. – JENKEM
Ground Glass: Aaron Herrington – JENKEM
Not every skater can just casually flow through the streets of New York City and clock some tasteful clips in a quick fashion, but Aaron Herrington has definitely made a career out of it. Settle in and get ready to watch some ultra-crispy skating caught on technology invented in 1923, and keep an eye out for more “Ground Glass” features from James on JENKEM.
G-FILES 001 – JENKEM
The Genesis crew out of Seattle has slowly become part of the Jenkem fam over the past couple of years, so they decided to ask filmer and editor Ian Ostrowski if he’d be down to film a recurring segment for the site while he finalizes Genesis 3 (which will be coming very soon). The result is our latest series dubbed “G-Files.” Take a peek into the Genesis world and let us know what guest skater we should throw into their van for the next episode. Featuring Dylan Clark, Caden Smith, Cass Bermudez, Jasper Levine, Darrian Williams, TJ Robinson, KJ Phanissay, Cole Hartman, Carl Depaolo, Nacho Ponce and Alex Lobasyuk.
Transitioning from Pro Skating to Furniture Making with Rob Pluhowski – JENKEM
Rob Pluhowski discovered his love for woodworking and started making furniture with the help of a friend right as he was deciding to back out of the skate industry. Through his dedication to craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail, he has attracted a strong clientele of designers who custom order his stunning (and expensive) work for the elite.
We took the drive over to Jersey City to check out his studio, see how he works, and hear a little more about why he decided to honorably bow out from skating in pursuit of another passion. – JENKEM
PREMIERE: Shogo Zama in “MAGENTAPES” by Magenta Skateboards – JENKEM
For the last couple of years Japanese skateboarding has been getting a good amount of shine. Magenta skateboards was ahead of the curve and has been a part of the skate scene there for nearly a decade. Meet their newest recruit, Shogo Zama – He’s fast, calculated, and his pants are just the right amount of baggy. What more could you want? – JENKEM
Staten Island with Leo Heinert and Marco Hernandez | Neighborhoods – JENKEM
In this episode, we took the ferry into Staten Island to meet up with pro skater Leo Heinert and photographer Marco Hernandez. The two “forgotten borough” natives took us on a tour of some of their childhood spots and introduced us to some new faces making it happen in the car garages and schoolyards of Staten Island. – JENKEM
JENK TV – A day (and a half) with Corporate Skateboards
Welcome to another episode of Jenk TV! This time around Jenkem headed out to Los Angeles to meet up with Reggie, the brains behind Corporate Skateboards and his ragtag crew of riders. The brand caught our attention with their wild graphics and eclectic crew of characters who all have styles that don’t seem like they would work together yet somehow do.
PREMIERE: “Hell Cherub” by Redd Sarson – JENKEM
Redd Sarson’s latest video “Hell Cherub” features filming, editing, and skating at the highest level and he did it all while working some shit jobs – something many spoiled skaters in the states aren’t privy to. Enjoy this Aussie indie banger.
JENKEM – Shop Talk at NJ Skateshop in Jersey City, NJ
Jenkem took a trip to the foreign land of Jersey City to visit NJ Skateshop to hear from some native New Jersians. The guests go from telling us that Ishod doesn’t claim Jersey enough to saying that Tik Tok is just for single moms in their 30s.
