Night and Day, DTLA with Stevie Williams

Night and day in downtown Los Angeles: the bustling daytime neighbourhood said to have about 500,000 jobs but only 58,000 (official) residents empties at night into a surreal, serene landscape of deserted boulevards and silent skyscrapers. The bustle of foot traffic and vendors subside, thrusting the boarded up theatres and empty office buildings to the forefront. Downtown is a dichotomy of differences. Now rebranded and abbreviated to the hip “DTLA,” the sight of the Spanish mission that founded the modern-day city of Los Angeles was once home to the Tongva, a Native American people. What was once a thriving theatre and arts district now hosts a Skid Row with one of the largest stable homeless populations in the country. Like night and day, it’s hard not to ignore the differences. Stevie Williams is spending more time at his Los Angeles home these days and gives us his take on the difference of twelve hours in this short piece directed by Ryan Allan and presented by G-Shock.

One Night In New York: Aaron Herrington and Brian Delatorre

New York is a cold-hearted bitch. She’s the prettiest girl you’ve ever laid eyes on that you know could break your heart at any moment. There’s a price to pay and it’s not just on the price tag. You wake up at war with the world and then the buzz of the battlefield rings around the clock. To skate through New York is one of the most exhilarating but exhausting experiences. Before you know it you’re too tired from skating to the spot to actually skate the spot. People are in your way everywhere and they all need something from you. The most dramatic weather has trampled the urban jungle and it’s riddled with cracks, potholes, glass, rubbish and weather-beaten asphalt. The character of the city is undeniable but you gotta have just as much heart as The Big Apple itself to keep your head up. “There are so many cities out there with similar energy, but skating in NYC is amazing because of the people, the food, the energy, and the spots of course. It’s not always the easiest place to go skate and be productive, but just being on your skateboard, you get to see the city in a way normal people would not.”

Wes Kremer’s Perfect Day

We’ve all had them, those perfect days. Nothing all that special happens, you know, you wake up feeling fine, sun shining. With no pressing obligations, errands or chores, you go to the room you like chilling in the most, sit there, get a loose idea of what the day will hold; nothing so binding that you’d call it a plan, something more of a framework. Figure you’ll head over to the warm-up spot, some bros show up, and you end up skating all day. Nothing heavy, just tinkering around, skate some nugs, cruise down to the beach. Those days can be the most satisfying—the ones riddled with spontaneity. Here’s a perfect day, with Wes Kremer.
