After going through the VQS qualifying and a semi-final round, only eight women competing at the Rockstar Energy Open made it to Sunday’s final in Portland. Although it took hard work for the women finalists to get here, everyone’s light-hearted spirits, camaraderie, and cheering from the packed crowd easied the pressure, making for a fun final. First Person: Lazer Crawford Spotlight Moment in The Big Leagues
In the second installment of First Person, a new video series that gives a skateboarder’s perspective in competitions, street missions, and filming video parts, we follow up with Lazer Crawford and his first-time career big win at the Rockstar Energy Open. “Has anyone ever won their first pro contest?” uttered pro skateboarder and host Sean Malto as everyone watched Lazer drop in for his last chance at making his first podium debut in the big leagues. The street best trick jam saw more tricks fall from the course than rain drops, which is what we all wanted at the Rockstar Energy Open. The street course was open to all competitors for a 45-minute jam format focused on the 3-block section and a rail explicitly installed for the Best Trick contest. The park best trick jam unleased 45 minutes of drop-in time for both men and women skateboarders to get after hammers and a chance to roll away with cash. The one big session was hectic but provided non-stop action that kept everyone on their feet. Following the men’s street VQS qualifier, the top six moved onto the semi-final, where they were met by seventeen skaters, making for a total field of twenty-three. This was the largest and longest contest of the Rockstar Energy Open and the most important for street skateboarders to make it in the top ten to advance into the final. Nevertheless, the fans who packed the bleachers, sidelines and climbed trees were in for a show.
