Portraits: Tristan Rennie

While in kindergarten, learning different shapes, letters, how to count, and all other foundation skills, Tristan Rennie knew that he wanted to be a professional skateboarder. Little did kindergarten Tristan know that dream would come true, but his adult self is now taking up a career that most kids would pick as their dream job.

Tristan has devoted 20 years of his life to skateboarding. He has covered contest podiums, compiled remarkable footage, and continues to keep the spirit of backyard pool skating alive. Only most recently, in the past four years, has everything outside of skateboarding changed for Tristan, as he becomes a father and husband, which leads him to build a career safety net outside of skateboarding. CORE: Kingswell with Patrick Melcher and DJ Chavez

Welcome to the first installment of Platfrm’s newest video series, CORE. This series will explore the people, shops, brands, non-profits, and all things skateboarding related that shape the industry.

In this first episode, we take a closer look at Kingswell, a brick and mortar store situated in the hillside neighborhood of Los Feliz in Los Angeles, California. Established in 2013 and co-owned by former professional skateboarders Patrick Melcher and DJ Chavez, Kingswell aims to be more than just a retail space for skateboarding products. It also serves as a hub for skateboarders and incorporates elements such as a tattoo booth, space for photography and art displays, and occasional music performances. Melcher and Chavez’s vision for the store reflects their deep-rooted history in skateboarding and their desire to emphasize creativity and originality within the sport. In this video, you’ll learn about the two shop owners, their skateboarding careers, how the store came to be, and even uncover a historical Easter egg related to the Kingswell location.
