Chris Russell: Skateboarding Chaos Meets Jiujitsu Discipline | Portraits – The Platfrm

Chaos and discipline only scratch the surface when describing all that is Chris Russell. Currently residing in Ocean Beach, San Diego—but originally from Hermosa Beach—Chris has been surrounded by surfing and skating since day one. Hitting the road to compete was a family affair in his early days, but as a teenager he began taking on the road solo to tear up and hold on to everything in his way.

But there’s another side to Chris, too. Lately, he’s been learning to be a strength and conditioning coach. For the last five years, Chris has taken to jiujitsu, learning a lot about discipline while taking his personal fitness to the next level. “Skateboarding is chaotic, and it’s the best thing, but I think within that—and as you get older—you want to feel a little bit more grounded and secure. The beauty about [jiujitsu] is that the better I am in here, the better I am on my board.” Go deep in this episode of Portraits: Chris Russell to see new clips of him ripping while he gives us an update on his life’s current events.

In doing so, he will aim to set two world records: the highest-ever drop-in, and the fastest speed reached on a standard skateboard. Guinness World Record officials will be present to verify the attempts.

Primitive Skate Proudly Welcomes Aimu Yamazuki

“I first came across Aimu on Instagram’s Explore page. He had posted a little line that opened with a kickflip, and it was one of the most amazing flatground kickflips I had ever seen. I went straight down the rabbit hole watching all his videos. Instantly, I became a fan. His pop, his power, his board control, his finesse, and the way he stays calm on the board—it’s just really beautiful to watch him skate.

At Primitive, we have always built our team around three eras: honoring the past, representing the present, and pushing the future. I take pride in helping carry that mission forward by supporting the next generation of skaters who are laying the foundation for where skateboarding is headed. After watching Aimu skate—and later getting the chance to meet and skate with him myself—I knew right away he was going to be an important part of that future, carrying the torch not just for Primitive but for skateboarding as a whole.

I am honored to officially welcome Aimu Yamazuki to the Primitive Skate family.” – Paul Rodriguez
