Skater Gonzi’s Fight with Borderline Schizophrenia – VICE

Polish skater and artist Gonzi has been vocal about his fight against depression and borderline schizophrenia.
Gonzi picked up a skateboard at the age of five and started hanging out with older skaters in his hometown of Łódź, exposing him to a life of parties and drug use at a young age.

He smoked his first joint at 13, and was 17 when he experienced a psychotic break due to drug use and was diagnosed with borderline paranoid schizophrenia. He thanks skateboarding, his friends, and art for still being here today. – Vice

Skateboarding Takes Over Floripa | Red Bull Skate Generation

The Red Bull Skate Generation contest itself is of course just the culmination of an entire weekend of skating and get-togethers around the island of Florianópolis to celebrate skateboarding culture and the community it has built here. As part of an island tour, Grazi Olliveira went to check out the notorious Ladeira downhill which you will doubtless remember from Madars Apse’s superb episode of Skate Tales with the Yuppie family with whom this stretch of road is forever associated.

Connected to the mainland of Santa Catarina state on Brazil’s Atlantic seaboard by just an expansion bridge, Floripa- as she is affectionately known- is not only home to more bowls per square metre than anywhere else in the world but a gnarly downhill scene, world class surfing and is also a place where nature in all its diverse glory expresses itself more fully than almost anywhere else on the planet.
