Last year during our 25 Years of X Games celebration, Selema “Sal” Masekela sat down for a stellar hour-plus interview that was used in part for the 25 Years of X Games show on ESPN. Selema’s start at X Games was as a play-by-play and sideline reporter, but that quickly evolved into a position as host of X Games. And Selema will be the first to admit: he thought the Extreme Games would not last. But eventually, he ran with it and became the face of X Games for 13 years. Twenty years ago today, on August 11, 2001, X Games held its first Skateboard Street competition at City Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. And it was mayhem. Imagine the scenario: across a busy downtown street from Love Park, Philadelphia’s City Hall was already a go-to destination for street skaters. And with the addition of a few banked landings that created new lines, X Games took to the streets for the very first time. Featured skaters include Kerry Getz, Eric Koston, Kareem Campbell, Kyle Berard, Chris Senn, Ricky Oyola, Rick McCrank, Josh Kalis and some impromptu MC’ing from Jason Ellis.

Pacifico’s Skateboard Vert Best Trick at X Games 2021 was an unexpected surprise for all of us, following the last minute addition of world renowned legend Tony Hawk to the start list. Tony simply showed up, felt like skating and made it happen. But there’s more to Best Trick than Tony’s presence. From a vert extension on the ramp to a young Brazilian upstart named Gui Khury turning heads, Skateboard Vert Best Trick went next level in 2021.
